Not every teacher is smart and inspiring
I went out to claim Reo on Tuesday. To my surprise, the road was blocked. Thousands of contract teachers made crowd in front of my office. They're asking to be upgraded as permanent employees. Media made it hot by saying that lots of them have been working for years, hoping people will be sympathetic. Sadly, when I read people comments on paper, they condemn this action. Nobody asked you to be teacher, and that you're not promoted is the cause of your own bad quality.
For me, they're the reason I got home late. The traffic was so heavy since we couldn't use the main road. I wonder have they ever think that their students might see this and wondering how come our teachers are not so inspiring?
Oh teacher. I have complicated feelings about this profession. Not everyone becoming teacher hold this virtue of being positive light to younger generations. The fact is getting into educational college is much easier than to general university. So, in my era, many people enrolled local edu university because they're afraid of not going to be accepted in our city general university. Most don't even write educational major as their first choice.
I think being teacher is the hardest profession that no ordinary people should do that. It's exclusive job for those with brilliant mind and amazing emotional quotient. However, that's not what happen in the field today. Most not-so-motivated educational university graduates convey their unhappiness to students when they teach them. That's why they're so attached in every educational form they do. Ever wonder why teachers hardly pay attention to bullying? They think it's an additional job without pay.
hah! Pay..money...is all current teachers think about. I thought teaching is all about virtue, but then teachers compare with other jobs. Yes, one can't live without money. But, always asking money without showing performance is the worst. Guess why teachers in private school never complain? They're paid enough because they're skilled enough.
The problem lies in quality. I remember reading the jakarta post's article saying that competency programmes pushed by government in order to get every teacher certified is not related to the educational progress. The programmes focus more on increasing teacher's take home pay, instead of sending learning experience to new level.
On contrary, kids are getting smarter. So, as the raw material gets higher in quality, the teachers are left with little work to deliver curriculum. However, they are lack of manners, things we don't read on text book. In result, todays school might produce more evil geniuses than ever. What's the consequences for that? More bullying, more sadistic crime by young kids. Thank you teacher.
I think it's not easy when people you taught is smarter than you. We're reading about Ahmed Muhammed who made clock but his stupid science teacher suspected it as bomb. The kid ended up in police custody. Islamophobia, they say. But, I think that teacher is just not smart and suffering from mental disorder. If you check DSM V, it's clear that phobia is part of Anxiety Disorder. That teacher needs mental care assistance immediately. Experts did say teaching is one of the most depressing job.
Still, I have hope for future education. More people are becoming aware of educational system. Even our Elementary and Middle Education Ministry comes from educational thinker. I hope he's stick with the force he fought before given the position. I know it's easier to yell when you're out of system. But, once you're in, you have to deal with reality and to fix it requires more time. I hope the Minister finishes what he's appointed for. For the sake of this country.
