Today's adults don't cook
Cooking is part of our daily life. At least, that's what I learn when growing up. I always saw my mom in the kitchen, preparing a delicious meal for the family. It becomes my ideal. My mother never forced me to learn cooking, though. But, I know some basics.
Living in Jakarta shocks me in another way. It seems like lots of young moms don't even do the cooking. My first exposure to the reality was when my colleague got married to her childhood friend and she said that she can't cook. Fortunately, they had a cook/maid at home.
Unfortunately, this practice is a common in this city. A lot of my adult friends, seniors, or older strangers don't cook at home. Even though they're are moms. There are various reason for this.
First, they're too tired. Let me quote my old friend words describing living in Jakarta, "People fight to get to office, then they fight again when trying to go home." It's a battlefield out here where you have to wake up early to face traffic jam and got home after sunset (of course after a battle with another traffic). As result, they get home with less energy left to even peek into the kitchen.
Second, they have no skill. Just like them, their mother was busy, too. They had no time teaching the kids how to cook. So, they grow up with only ability to boil water. Nah.
Third, they have maids. Just like my friend I talked above, many households in this area hire maids to manage the house. This means being wife means a manager. She doesn't have to do everything, just make sure everything is well maintained.
On the contrary of this adult's reality, I find it pitiful for adult to unable to cook. If you're even a house maker, this skill is a must to make sure every member of the household save. for me, making your own food mean:

- quality control. You know the ingredients. You make sure the cleaning process is done thoroughly. You know how it's made.
- love expression. Mom making food for the kids means she cares. Plus, isn't kid loves the smell of flour and spicy around Mom?
- making connection. If there's one thing that makes me miss home, it's my mom's cooking. It what connects me now that I'm independent and living far from my parents.
- a media of contemplation. Research mentioned that washing dishes could be a contemplation media. Let's use same analogy to cooking. You pour attention to the crock, hoping it'll turn out delicious. You get to smell it first. I like it. But, I probably enjoy it because I don't have to make it for other people. Obligation may screw everything. or may be not.
Bonus: what kid think when his mom can't cook:
